Lisa Moro // Research // Ukraine and surrogacy. expectant times

I have found quite a lot of my ideas for this project coming together overnight. We are at critical point with the situation in Ukraine, with this being the top news item for the past few days and watching some of the live stream footage from that area. A word that comes to my mind is

EXPECTANT.

The tensions are very high and there is something strange about remotely watching people going about their usual business whilst something so frightening is iminent.

At the same time, for my research I am following many Facebook groups particularly those who are using surrogate agencies in Ukraine. These commissioning parents are facing the possibility that the babies they have ordered are likely to be born in a war zone.

Ukraine is then of a handful of countries where commercial surrogacy is still allowed, and there are likely hundreds if not thousands of babies who will be in a very precarious position.

There are metaphors between these looming events. The idea of invasion, displacement, expectation.

In this video you can see that the baby is so close to being born that you can see its form through the skin of its mother. These are themes and images I am thinking about at the moment.
