RHYTHMS AND RULES

Building on my last blog post and the idea of forgotten narratives, I went on to look at dance culture in the context of it being a cure for illness. Whilst layering medicine adverts over rave scenes, I reflected on the reality behind it all and how dance is seen as a cure for many. I came across a video of 5Rhythms, a practice I’m familiar with and a personal family favourite. Leading me to think more about the healing aspect and how dance frees people, seen in various cultures across time. I find the energy and emotion seen in such movement very compelling, whether positive or negative, wherever, whenever, it is a way to heal.
5Rythms is done in steps yet all based on grounding and allowing yourself to be, in a spirituality context, no set rules or instructions. Prompting me to consider the role of instructions in both dance and medicine as well as day to day life. Whilst doing research I came across various talks and videos highlighting dance's health benefits, although dance is encouraged from a young age for many people, it is often just seen as a hobby or a bit of fun.
What if we listened to what the past had to say? Many cultures still take part in traditional healing dances and ancient rituals yet what if globally we were still taught them? Thinking about the bigger picture, have we let media bury narratives that could make significant worldwide difference? Have we allowed the modern day to over complicate things?
