(Jay) The Jack of all trades versus the Jocks of the Internet




After searching my typical domiciles within the constant flowing machine of produced media, I found myself searching for inspiration in the same place I waste prominent hours, TikTok. Looking for inspiration, I found these three videos that highlight AI voices and platforms for AI through the understanding of the human psyche, human emotions and emotional narrative. These three pieces remain captivating utilising flashing imagery, prominent cinematic music and/or narratives that focus on the human experience. 

This inspired me into some decisions on my final piece for this residency. 

I want to challenge AI.

As a writer, a musician and an artist, my drive for human connection within my work is my core value. Emotional narratives, my craft. With this progression of AI? My work is at threat. So in an anti-artificial intelligence mindset, I’m planning to collaborate or rather compete with AI to see who can generate the better pieces. First with a prompt I write, and then again with the AI’s prompt.

I am a moving image predominant artist currently situated in Bournemouth. My practice is conceptually driven and rooted in phenomenology and expanded cinema. Through my practice, I explore philosophy, mindset formation and perspective challenging examination, looking into how internal belief systems are formulated, broken down and manipulated through audiovisual experience. My artistic output extend beyond just art as I am also a published musician and poet. Sound and written language are vital to me as they act as catalysts for intellectual development and inquiry during the idea generation stage of production. Going beyond that they also greatly provide in the final product as most of my work are accompanied by a piece of writing and a score for the piece that I had composed myself. In these score, I study into music theory to find the optimal usage of composition and minor elements to bolster the narrative, emotional pacing and conceptual intentions. This balanced duality of image and sound helps me approach moving image as a fully embodied experience rather than a typical visual medium with musical accompaniment.
